Preparing to Proclaim: An Introduction to Evangelism

Whose Success?

“The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”

Acts 11:21

After Pentecost, the early Christians flourished with growth. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and fleeing from persecution, people told others about the risen Christ. The message was being delivered and thousands were receiving faith.

How often do pastors and members of the evangelism committee dream of similar results? Do we have a tendency to look at the massive church down the street and wonder what we are doing wrong?

It’s natural to compare when perceived results don’t match expectations.

Agree or Disagree: We sometimes place too much emphasis on attracting people to come to church in place of delivering personal messages about the risen Christ.

Just that understanding that the culture today “doesn’t know that they don’t know” is so important. Dave’s comment about people today get their “truth” from social media and the news media really shows how we need to redirect our efforts in reaching people. So how best are we going to do that? We need to put on our “critical thinking hat”.

Thank you, Duayne. Biblical ignorance is at an all-time high. It’s good to understand that we can never assume that a person knows what Jesus has already done for us and why. It’s a great time to be God’s messenger.

And because Biblical ignorance is at an all-time high, in my humble opinion, there’s more fertile soul-ground out there than ever before too!

I fully agree! I come across people who may say that they believe in God, but really have no idea who Christ is and why. And I also believe that people who don’t call themselves Christians or are “unaffiliated” with a church are not necessarily rejecting the truth of the Bible but have never heard the Truth before. Jesus is right! The harvest is plentiful and the workers are few.
