Why Trusting the Word is a Key to Proclamation

There is a profound irony at the heart of the Christian faith: God has chosen the most fragile instruments to carry out his eternal work. When we consider His “highest purpose”—the salvation of souls and the gathering of his people into heaven—it seems baffling that he would entrust this to us.

But as the prophet Isaiah reminds us, “God’s ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the way he equips us to be his voice in an unbelieving world.

We often approach outreach or evangelism with a heavy sense of performance anxiety. We worry about having the right answers, the perfect delivery, or the most persuasive personality. However, the effectiveness of the gospel has never been attached to human talent.

In Isaiah 55:10-11, God provides a beautiful, natural metaphor for his message:

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish… so is my word that goes out from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Just as a farmer cannot force a seed to grow through sheer willpower, we cannot “force” faith. The power is in the seed—the Word itself. It is “God-breathed,” designed by the Creator to accomplish exactly what he intends. When we trust this power, the pressure shifts from our performance to his promises.

In our world, we encounter many people whose hearts seem like hard-packed earth—unyielding, cynical, or indifferent. Yet, God is often at work “tilling” that ground in ways we cannot see, using the circumstances of life to break the surface. Our role is to step into the field with a bag of seed and start throwing. We don’t need to wait for the “perfect” soil; we trust that beneath the surface, a process of faith is beginning that may eventually blossom into fruit.

When we step out in faith—despite our fears or the challenging circumstances around us—we aren’t walking alone. We are relying on the Holy Spirit that breathed life into the Scriptures to breathe life into our conversations.

The takeaway is simple but transformative: Trust in the power of God’s Word is what helps prompt the action to share it. When you believe the seed works, you can’t help but plant it. Like faithful servants being told what to do by the Master; sow the seed and watch what God brings to life.
