Preparing Our Hearts for Christmas: The Word Entrusts
Before time began… was the Word.
And the Word became the Light… and made his dwelling among us.
The Word remains today… so that all may believe.
It is the Word we celebrate every Christmas – there, wrapped in cloths, and lying in the manger.
In the second of a three part series, we prepare our hearts for Christmas by marveling in the Word that God entrusts all those who believe in Him.
“Words are important. They convey feelings, opinions, and facts.
Words are powerful. They hurt, implore, and inspire.
Out of love, God sent His Word to bring salvation.” (Preparing Our Hearts for Christmas: The Word Works)
God – the Word incarnate – disguised himself in the flesh to an unbelieving world that human eyes could not see and hearts that could not understand. It was human hearts that sent Jesus to the cross – because he was a threat to religious power. It was human eyes that killed the baby boys in Bethlehem – because he was a threat to political power.
The Word still remains hidden in the darkness of unbelief. Only the power of the Word unmasks itself to who He is – the Savior, the Promise fulfilled when time began, the Word made flesh to be a perfect substitute.
It is the Word – and only the Word — that opens eyes that were once blind and opens hearts that were once closed.
God’s Word is so important… that he entrusts his Words to believers.
They are to be preserved without error, proclaimed without fear, and provided without impure motivation.
It is a sacred trust.
“We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God who tests our hearts.” (1 Thessalonians 2:2-4)
The new Christians in Thessalonica are like us today. They clung to God’s promises despite fear, uncertainty, immorality, and persecution. They needed hope and purpose. Paul reminded them of the promise and the purpose given to him – and it is the same promise and purpose given to us.
As believers have been set apart by faith – we have been commissioned to be faithful and proclaim our faith.
“So, then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Cor. 4:1-2)
The angels rejoiced and so should we. They lit up the night sky to proclaim the birth of the Savior, and we can make that same invitation. “Go and see the Word.”
The words of Isaiah tell us, “How beautiful are the feet that bring Good News.” Believers are given the privilege and opportunity to bubble over with good news as a grandparent telling others of a new grandchild or a parent expecting a new arrival. God has entrusted his children – his family – to rejoice with him and share Good News.
The Word became flesh to dwell among us.
The Word is Spirit that dwells within us.
Trust God. Trust his presence. Embrace the purpose for which God has entrusted us.
