3 Thoughts on Sharing the Gospel When You Feel Like A Loser

When Christ commissions us to share the message of salvation, the task can look like an insurmountable mountain. Our good intentions often feel like a series of lopsided defeats—especially when fear keeps us from witnessing at all. How do we overcome the guilt of feeling like a “loser” in evangelism?

Years ago, a coach took over a historically struggling college football program. When asked how he handled a season of humiliating blowouts, his response was striking. He wasn’t focused on the scoreboard; he was focused on three daily habits to build a victorious culture: get a little bit better, never give up, and have fun.

These same three principles can transform how we share the Gospel, shifting us from feeling defeated to stepping out in joyful confidence.

1. Get a Little Bit Better Every Day

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (Romans 7:15)

The loudest voice we hear each day is our own inner critic. Left unchallenged, this negative self-talk keeps us sidelined with guilt. We either feel hopelessly underprepared to answer questions, or smugly overconfident—seeking to win an argument rather than win a soul.

Getting a little bit better means finding the Gospel balance. Sharing Christ isn’t just memorizing verses; it’s mixing love with knowledge, sincerity with truth, and compassion with reason. When we trust that God has already prepared the listener’s heart, we can confidently take small, daily steps out of our comfort zones.

2. Never Give Up—No Matter What

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances…” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Down 55-10 in the fourth quarter, that football coach knew his players wanted to quit. But he used the blowout to teach them how to win the mental battle within themselves.

In ministry or in our own families, planting seeds takes time. You may have a loved one who has rejected dozens of invitations or offered unkind retorts to your faith. Never give up on them. When the Holy Spirit urges you to speak, remember that you don’t know the condition of the soil. You might just be the answer to a prayer someone else prayed decades ago. Take a time-out in God’s Word when you are weary, but never stop praying.

3. Find the Joy

“There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents…” (Luke 15:7)

Evangelism feels like a chore when we act as our own Monday-morning quarterbacks—kicking ourselves for saying the wrong thing, or feeling guilty for saying nothing at all.

But God doesn’t call us to a guilt-driven burden; He invites us into joy. Witnessing is about trusting the seed, not the sower. When we step out in faith, we get a front-row seat to the miracle of salvation. There is an incredible adventure in being part of the process that makes heaven rejoice.

Christ has already made the ultimate sacrifice, and the final victory is secure. We don’t share the Gospel to earn a victory; we share it because we already possess it. When we are fully absorbed by the truth of what Jesus has done, we can’t help but transmit that joy to the world.
