Why Evangelism Requires Exercising
Evangelism is difficult because it requires heavy lifting. Too often, we place heavy stones on our own path that get in the way: boulders of guilt, stones of distraction. We quickly talk ourselves out of stepping into opportunities to share our faith. Our human nature would rather not be bothered, and we easily lose our footing by focusing on ourselves rather than trusting in God’s promises.
In God’s Word, we find clear guidance on how to remove these heavy stones:
“…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:12-13)
Sharing God’s Word requires a strenuous, ongoing effort that encompasses mind, body, and soul. It’s like asking someone to run a marathon, climb a mountain, or bike across America without taking the time to train. Our human nature is far more attracted to sitting in a favorite chair with a bowl of ice cream than exercising our body and sustaining our will.
The Apostle Paul knew this weakness well. He daily battled his sinful nature and pride, burying “self” in Christ to receive true strength. In doing so, he exercised his faith by placing his trust in Christ’s promises. He knew that for those set apart to share what Christ has done:
- Sharing our faith will be one of the greatest exercises of our faith.
- Sharing our faith will be one of the greatest expressions of our faith.
Our human nature is prone to be lazy and selfish. A life in Christ requires a daily, if not hourly, regeneration that begins with repentance and continues by trusting God’s promises. Through the power of God’s Word, our minds are transformed by the truth that we are already worthy in Christ, perfect in his presence, and accepted by his grace.
This new nature inspires us to see the lost sheep instead of ignoring them, to watch for golden opportunities, and to be prepared to give reasons for the hope we have in Jesus. These activities are a direct result of God working in us and through us—all according to his will and purpose.
One of the greatest blessings of sharing God’s Word is the blessing we receive in return. Just as there are undeniable advantages that come from physical exercise, there are profound blessings associated with exercising our faith. And it seems that the Lord needs Christians to be fit!
It’s time to start exercising those spiritual muscles God has given us. Let’s carry out his purpose by sharing fis Word—Jesus Christ—with the world.
