A Brand that brings Peace, Rest… and a Message

Organizations establish brands to help identify themselves to the world. People see the mark or image and immediately think of that organization. Brands stick with people. When they see it enough times, they are able to associate that particular identity with a person, organization, or mission.

A person’s brand can be their identity. A chosen image declares to the world who we are or what we want to be identified with.

For an example, take a walk around your neighborhood. Look around and you will see a person’s identity. There is a flagpole with an American flag waving gently in the breeze. At one house, a person can see a white and blue flag underneath the U.S. flag. That home owner is proud of being an American and of his Greek heritage. Another home has an NFL or college football team banner. There are bumper stickers on cars parked in the driveway. Yard signs will identify political preferences. Images are even tattooed on a person’s skin to identify themselves apart from the rest of the world.

Brands are important. They communicate to the world your identity, purpose, or who you belong to.

An image for those who are set apart by Christ – who are redeemed by his blood – is the cross. It is a symbol for something far greater. It points to a message. The transforming words of the gospel is brand for whom a believer finds their identity and proclaim its power.

“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: See, I will beckon to the Gentiles, I will lift up my banner to the people: they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their shoulders (Isaiah 49:22)

The cross is a symbol that points to something far greater… the message of the cross.

The cross is a symbol that can identify and separate. It identifies believers as redeemed children of God and separates them from the world. But the cross by itself may no longer be a strong enough message. It is a symbol that is often misused in society – more of a good luck charm whose message is muddled.  [Is Wearing a Cross a True Proclamation of Faith]

There is a stronger banner — the power of God’s Word. 

That is Christ’s banner.

It is His banner that draws people to himself.

It is His banner that converts.

It is His banner that gather together those who believe.


“Then you will know that I am the LORD, those who hope in me will not be disappointed.” (Isaiah 49:23)

A Christian’s identity is in our purpose – to be His messenger. It is not enough to be a light on top of a hill to display our love, but to actively proclaim the reason for the hope we have in Christ.

In times of prosperity – we lift up His banner.

In time of peril – we lift up His banner.

Believers today can no longer assume that people already know or understanding our identity in the cross. The gospel message is the banner we confidently and courageously lift up and display to the world. It is our hope, our heritage, our purpose… and our brand.
